Oil paints are superior to all other media in their saturation, permanence and range of pigments. The surface of the painting retains all the signature brush-marks exactly as the artist applied them. This results in uniquely colourful and durable paintings brighter than any printed material creating a deep illusion of light and depth.

The artist, John Cheall studied painting at degree level and graduated with honours from Loughborough College of Art in 1990 (now Loughborough University, England). He has since worked as a professional landscape painter, his work is exhibited and collected internationally and is represented in the national collection with paintings in various hospitals and other public institutions.

John favours a realistic approach to painting being fascinated with the transformation of the chaos of the palette into the careful and disciplined balance of the finished painting. He has closely studied and transcribed the old masters being chiefly influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, Caspar David Freidrich, John Martin, Jan Vermeer aswell as more recent photorealists such as Richard Estes. His work is mainly concerned with the wild and high places of Britain but as a life-long motorsport fan he enjoys the occasional challenge of rendering brightly coloured Formula 1 subjects.
