I’ve been meaning to say that I currently have work on show at the Blue Owl Gallery in Grantham. The exhibition offers a chance to see again my prize-winning ‘Cadmium Event’ paintings which were previously shown at the 2015 Nottingham Castle Open together with a selection of pictures I made for the 2016 show at the Tarpey Gallery. This is the first time these paintings have been seen together as one body of work. Inspired by the unsurpassed drama of the Black Cuillin mountains on the Isle of Skye, Scotland I made a conscious attempt to strike out off my usual path and create paintings that are more concerned with retinal impact and emotional expression rather than detailing particular locations. Landscape painting is traditionally seen as a celebration of the status quo but with these pictures I am much more concerned with the land as it once was or as it could be. I have in recent years developed methods in the actual creation of landscape itself, exaggerating the elements of topography, viewpoint and lighting, pushing ever onward in a quest inspired by the frontier painters of the Hudson River school and the phantasmagorias of John Martin.
The Blue Owl Gallery is at Grantham Tennis Club, Gonerby Road, Grantham. NG31 8HU and is open 8am-8pm seven days a week. Tel. 01476 591391
